Surrey public sector to launch contract portal

Public sector organisations throughout Surrey have united to launch a new shared online portal designed to advertise and handle contracts.

Surrey County Council, Surrey Police, the University of Surrey and the 11 borough and district authorities in the county will begin to post details on the SupplytoSurrey website in the Autumn.

The goal of the website is to increase the proportion of contracts awarded to local firms. The council has pledged that 60 per cent of spending in the country should go to the local community, and the website is designed to help achieve this aim.

Denise Le Gal, cabinet member for business services at Surrey County Council, said:

“Local businesses are the bedrock of every community and launching SupplytoSurrey is about helping them and our economy thrive.

“With the new site offering hundreds of millions of pounds worth of contracts annually from a range of public services in Surrey, I’m sure it will go from strength to strength.”

As part of its plans, the council previously established BuildSurrey, a website designed to encourage suppliers in the construction sector to bid for work. The BuildSurrey project has already awarded £10 million worth of deals.

In May 2013, Surrey County Council was named as one of the top 10 councils to do business with as a result of its drive to help support SMEs through recruitment.
